Chile, one of the countries participating in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership ( CPTPP Agreement ), has tended to increase tuna imports from Vietnam in the past 3 years.

Chile is tending to increase tuna imports from Vietnam

According to statistics from the General Department of Customs , this South American country imported nearly 3 million USD of tuna products from Vietnam in the first 2 months of 2024, an increase of 58% over the same period in 2023.

In 2023, Vietnam will be the 4th largest tuna supplier to Chile after Thailand, Ecuador and China, accounting for a market share of more than 9%. While Vietnam and Thailand's tuna exports to markets have grown continuously over the past 3 years, Ecuador and China's exports have tended to decrease.

This year, Chile increased imports of both canned tuna and frozen tuna meat/loin from Vietnam. In particular, Vietnam's canned tuna exports to this market in the first 2 months of this year increased 3 times.

There are currently 10 businesses participating in exporting tuna to this South American country. Among them, Trinity Vietnam, Havuco and Nha Trang Bay are the three enterprises that export the most tuna to this market, accounting for 76% of total export turnover in 2023.

It is expected that Vietnam, with its import tax advantage as committed in the CPTPP Agreement, will be a strength for businesses to expand their business in this market. Therefore, Vietnam's tuna exports to Chile will continue to grow well in the coming months.
