Durian exports to the Chinese market have increased 10 times thanks to the Protocol |
“We also expect that after this visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping, the export market of these Fruit shops such as frozen durian, fresh coconut, dried coconut, grapefruit, avocado, lemon, etc. will be opened. Vietnam and China will strengthen cooperation on import and export of fruits and vegetables," Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen expected.
Also according to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, in fruit import-export cooperation between Vietnam and China, Vietnam is having a trade surplus.
As for durian products, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen said that from 2021 onwards, durian exports will only be about more than 200 million USD/year. Since July 2022, Vietnam has signed the Protocol to export durian to this market, durian export turnover has accelerated.
In 2022, durian exports will reach 420 million USD. It is expected that durian exports in 2023 will reach 2.3 billion USD, increasing 5 times compared to 2022 and increasing 10 times compared to 2021. Obviously, thanks to the Protocol, exports durian achieves such impressive results.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen said that exporting fruit to the Chinese market has more advantages than difficulties. Specifically, our country is geographically located near populous provinces of China such as Yunnan and Guangxi, which also means a large consumer market. These provinces (Yunnan, Guangxi,...) have markets very close to the border of Vietnam. From these markets, goods will be distributed throughout China.
Regarding difficulties, according to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, China has not signed a Protocol on many fruit products with Vietnam. Vietnam also has not officially exported many products to China.
“Thailand has officially exported more than 20 items, while Vietnam, with fruit, this number only stops at 11 items. In particular, Thailand's durian exports both fresh and frozen durian, while Vietnam only exports fresh durian," cited Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen also proposed that the authorities need to step up negotiations to be able to open and export more fruit products such as frozen durian, fresh coconut, dried coconut, grapefruit, avocado, lemon,... this market. These are products that Vietnam has a large output of. For goods that have been officially exported but have not yet signed the Protocol, state management agencies need to speed up the signing of the Protocol.
The second weakness of Vietnamese agricultural products is that fruit quality is not stable. Therefore, Vietnamese farmers need to pay more attention to quality factors.
“We have just exported fresh durian and have achieved a turnover nearly half that of Thailand, while Thailand exports both fresh and frozen durian. Therefore, the room for Vietnamese durian in the Chinese market is still very large", Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen expected.
According to Vietnam Trade Office in China, Vietnam ranks 10th among countries exporting agricultural products to China, Export turnover in 2022 will reach over 6 billion USD, accounting for about 2.6% of the country's total agricultural import value.
As for the fruit and vegetable group, Vietnam is in the group of three countries with the largest export turnover of fruit and vegetable products to the Chinese market, after Thailand and Chile.
According to the China Agricultural Outlook Report (2022 - 2031), in 2021, China's green vegetable consumption will reach 561 million tons, an increase of 0.5%; Fruit consumption reached 282 million tons, up 2.5%;...
