Vietnam ranks 2nd in the top 5 markets supplying the most coffee to Italy

The Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) cited statistics from the General Department of Customs as saying that in the first 9 months of 2023, Vietnam exported coffee to the Italian market reaching 117.85 thousand tons, worth 262 million USD. , increased 6.7% in volume and 10.8% in value compared to the same period last year.

In September 2023 alone, Vietnam's coffee exports to the Italian market decreased sharply by 48.5% in volume and 45.3% in value compared to August 2023, down 70% compared to September 2022. 1% in volume and 63.5% decrease in value.

In September 2023, Vietnam's average coffee export price to the Italian market reached 2,523 USD/ton, up 6.2% compared to August 2023 and up 22% compared to September 2022. Accumulated in the first 9 months of 2023, the average export price of Vietnamese coffee to Italy reached 2,224 USD/ton, up 3.9% over the same period last year.

In the first 9 months of 2023, Vietnam exports Robusta, Arabica and processed coffee varieties to the Italian market. In particular, the export turnover of Robusta coffee and processed coffee grew positively compared to the same period last year; On the contrary, Arabica coffee exports decreased sharply.

The proportion of Robusta coffee exports increases from 93.32% in the first 9 months of 2022 to 96.29% in the first 9 months of 2023; On the contrary, the proportion of Arabica and processed coffee exports decreased from 5.52% and 1.16% in the first 9 months of 2022 to 2.56% and 1.15% in the first 9 months of 2023, respectively.

 

Notably, Vietnam's coffee market share in Italy's total imports from foreign markets in the first 8 months of 2023 increased.

According to statistics from Eurostat, in the first 8 months of 2023, Italy imported coffee from non-EU markets reaching 425.8 thousand tons, worth approximately 1.32 million EUR (equivalent to 1.39 million USD). , increased 0.6% in volume and 1.5% in value compared to the same period last year.

In August 2023 alone, Italy imported coffee from non-EU markets reaching 43.2 thousand tons, worth 133.77 million EUR (equivalent to 141.14 million USD), down 23.3% in volume and down 27.4% in value compared to July 2023, up 1.9% in volume compared to August 2022, but down 9.8% in value.

According to Eurostat, in the first 8 months of 2023, Italy imported coffee from the Brazilian market reaching 127.1 thousand tons, worth 493.9 million EUR (equivalent to 521.1 million USD), down 1.8% in volume. , but increased 2.0% in value compared to the same period last year.

Brazil's coffee market share in Italy's total imports from foreign markets decreased slightly from 30.57% in the first 8 months of 2022 to 29.84% in the first 8 months of 2023.

In contrast, Italy increased coffee imports from Vietnam in the first 8 months of 2023, up 18.1% in volume and 14.8% in value over the same period last year, reaching 113.4 thousand tons, worth price 249 million EUR (equivalent to 262.8 million USD).

Vietnam's coffee market share in Italy's total imports from foreign markets increased from 22.7% in the first 8 months of 2022 to 26.64% in the first 8 months of 2023.

Notably, Italy sharply increased coffee imports from Tanzania in the first 8 months of 2023, an increase of 156.8% in volume and 154.3% in value over the same period last year, reaching 14.3 thousand tons. , worth 33.2 million EUR (equivalent to 35 million USD).

Tanzania's coffee market share in Italy's total imports from foreign markets increased from 1.32% in the first 8 months of 2022 to 3.36% in the first 8 months of 2023.
