"China 'eats', the demand in the domestic market also increases, so the price of durian in the garden increases day by day," said Manh Khuong, owner of a durian shop in Can Tho.

Referring to exports to the Chinese market , Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien, said that durian exports to this market have increased by more than 4,100% in a month. One day, the export of durian trucks is uncountable.

In mid-September 2022, a 100-ton durian batch of a gardener in Dak Lak was officially exported to the Chinese market. This is the first shipment officially exported under the protocol signed between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the General Administration of Customs of China in July 2022.

Answering CCTV13 channel of China Central Television on September 21, Mr. Lam Long Duc - General Director of Viet Hai Global Supply Chain Co., Ltd (China) - said: "From the Vietnamese side, durian has been brought to the market. Huu Nghi border gate only takes 2 hours. Durian fruit retains its freshness. Chinese consumers will now be able to eat delicious durian at competitive prices."

Right after approaching the first durian shipment, Mr. Duc said, the business will plan to buy 1 million durians from Vietnam, then expand its scale, together with Vietnamese businesses to invest in other fields. planting areas and construction of processing plants.

Durian trips in Lam Dong, the West, ... followed each other on the way to China. Enterprises receive large durian orders from importers of this country.

For example, Dung Thai Son Import-Export Trading Joint Stock Company received an order of 500,000 tons of durian. And Van Xuan Phat Import-Export Co., Ltd. revealed that every month, it regularly exports 1,000 tons according to partners' orders.

At a recent fruit forum, Mr. Bob Wang - Chairman of Nanning Business Association (Guangxi, China) - wants to import about 1,500 containers of Vietnamese durian from now until the Lunar New Year to serve the market. .

Similarly, Ms. Tra My - Provisional President of the Vietnam Business Association in China, informed that the business association had successfully negotiated to get an order of 10,000 tons of durian from a large Chinese importer.

According to statistics, only in October 2022, our country's durian export turnover to China reached nearly US$50 million, up 4,120% over the same period last year. This is an unprecedented increase in the history of the durian industry in Vietnam.

Notably, in October, China's durian import turnover was at $90.7 million. That is, Vietnam became the largest durian supplier to the billion-population market in October.

By the end of October 2022, the export turnover of the whole durian industry reached US$293.6 million, up 91.5% over the same period in 2021. Currently durian accounts for 17.3% of the total fruit export value. Vietnam in 10 months of 2022.

Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy, General Director of Chanh Thu Fruit Export Group Joint Stock Company, said that this is the beginning of durian fruit when exported to China. 2023 is the period of acceleration of this product, sales are expected to double. Many importers have placed large orders, exceeding the supply capacity of enterprises.

According to Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, China is the world's largest durian consumption market. Every year this country spends several billion USD to import durian fruit. From September 2022 up to now, Vietnam's durian exports to China have increased by a record.

"The orders for durian for Tet from importers are many. It is expected that in 2022, durian export turnover can reach nearly 400 million USD, especially exports to China are estimated at 300 million USD," he said. .

According to Mr. Nguyen, Vietnamese durian has many competitive advantages compared to Thai durian. For example, Thai durian is concentrated in large areas, but only seasonally; In our country, there are many different growing areas, different harvest times, so there are exports all year round.

The distance to transport durian from our country to China only takes about 1.5 days, ensuring fresh durian, while durian from Thailand takes about 10 days. Not to mention, the shipping cost included in the cost of durian in Vietnam is cheaper than in Thailand. These are the advantages that make Vietnamese durian confidently compete with Thai durian in China.

"The output of durian in Vietnam is currently over 1 million tons. If we do well in the growing areas, packaging facilities, and stable quality, in 2023, the export of this item can earn more than 1 billion VND. USD", Mr. Nguyen affirmed.

According to the Plant Protection Department (MARD), the price of durian has tripled since the protocol was issued, creating more income for farmers.

Recently, the General Department of Customs of China approved 32 more codes of growing areas and 5 codes of durian packing facilities of Vietnam to meet the requirements of the protocol and be allowed to export fresh durian to this country. .

Up to now, Vietnam has been granted a total of 113 growing area codes and packing facilities by China. The Plant Protection Department forecasts that number will continue to increase, because another 300 codes are in the process of online checking to complete procedures, waiting for permits.

Being granted an additional code will help Vietnamese durians have a wider road when exporting to China. However, the Plant Protection Department warned businesses, cooperatives and farmers about ensuring the spirit of cooperation and harmonization of interests between the parties in managing the planting area codes and packing facility codes. Since then, stabilizing the raw material area, ensuring durian quality, towards sustainable export.
