It is expected that by the end of 2022, Vietnam's seafood exports will reach the goal of 11 billion USD, up 25% compared to 2021. 22 years ago (2002) in Hanoi, VASEP held a ceremony to celebrate seafood export surpassing the USD 1 billion mark, a very impressive figure at that time. And 2022 marks the progress of the seafood industry when exports exceed 10 billion USD. This is a huge effort of businesses in the industry.
Mr. Truong Dinh Hoe - General Secretary of VASEP - said that 10 billion is a record level of Vietnam's seafood industry in more than 20 years of exporting to the world market. In which, shrimp exports reached $4.3 billion, up 30% over the same period last year. Pangasius exports have surpassed USD 2 billion, up more than 80% over the same period in 2021 and may reach USD 2.5 billion this year. Similarly, tuna products export turnover for the first time exceeded 1 billion USD.
In 2022, it is estimated that the seafood industry will account for 3% of Vietnam's total merchandise exports. Compared to the total export turnover of the domestic economic sector, the fisheries sector contributes nearly 12% of the value. On the world seafood export map, Vietnam is the third largest exporter, accounting for over 7% market share in the world market, just behind China and Norway.
The seafood industry has set a target of exporting 14 billion USD by 2030. To achieve this goal in the face of challenges of major markets, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien said that the seafood industry must turn around by going into deep processing, using traceable raw materials. and strengthen trade promotion flexibly with potential markets.
