According to Mr. Nam, pomelo is the 7th fruit of Vietnam allowed to be exported to the US, after mango, longan, litchi, dragon fruit, rambutan and breast milk.

“The official export of pomelos to the US is the result of long-term negotiation efforts of specialized agencies between the two sides and the persistent companionship of the Vietnamese pomelo producers and exporters community. , affirming the prestige of Vietnamese agricultural products is increasingly enhanced in the world market", Mr. Nam shared.

Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy, Director of Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Co., Ltd - the unit in charge of exporting the first batch of pomelos to the US, said that the product entering the US market has contributed to increasing the export turnover of medium-sized pomelos. increase the prestige of Vietnamese fruit products.

“With this situation, in November, the export of agricultural products is expected to reach more than 400 million USD and this year the fruit and vegetable industry can achieve approximately the same turnover as last year, about 3.5 billion USD. By 2023, agricultural exports are expected to grow by 20-30%.

After entering the US market, Vietnamese pomelo has a great opportunity to expand to conquer other markets such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan and China. In the coming time, the company's goal is to bring pomelos to large supermarket chains such as Costco and Walmart.

Not only pomelos, recently, Vietnamese agricultural products have continuously received a series of good news when many major agricultural products have been approved for official export to some fastidious markets.

According to the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), from the end of November, lemons and grapefruits will officially have a "visa" for export to New Zealand. Longan will go to Japan and become the 4th fruit allowed to be exported to this market.

Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that as of October, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export turnover reached US$2.75 billion (down 8%) over the same period last year. In the first months of 2022, due to the impact of China's tightening of import regulations, the fruit and vegetable industry struggled, at one point falling nearly 20%.

However, the fact that a series of agricultural products in the last months of the year have been licensed for official export are helping the fruit and vegetable industry to have the opportunity to reverse spectacularly. After durian was licensed for official export to China, exports of this item spiked when it reached more than 20,000 tons in just a few months. The selling price increased 3 times, sometimes up to 80-100 thousand VND/kg.

Mr. Tran Ngoc Tam, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ben Tre province, said that out of 7 Vietnamese fruit products exported to the US, Ben Tre has 3 products including: Grapefruit, Longan, and Rambutan.

With an area of about 10,000 hectares of pomelo growing, with an annual output of over 200,000 tons, the province has guided and supported people to take care of pomelo gardens according to safety and quality standards. At the same time, pay attention to the plant quarantine objects that the US side is interested in; building planting areas, organizing preliminary processing and packing after harvest, ensuring compliance with regulations. Currently, the whole province has been granted with 25 area codes for growing green skin pomelos for export to the EU and the US.

Upgrading preservation technology

As one of the first enterprises eligible to export pomelo officially to the US, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung, General Director of Vina T&T Group, shared, the company is very happy to continuously receive information about a series of Vietnamese fruits. In the past few days, businesses have been busy preparing many shipments for export, responding to the event. However, according to Mr. Tung, the peculiarity of fresh fruit is that it spoils quickly while exporting to the US, Europe, etc., which takes a long time, so to successfully conquer the markets requires enterprises to invest in good products. copies, especially in upgrading preservation technology for long-term transportation.

The general secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association said that Vietnamese fruits in the US market are evaluated as delicious and of good quality, but they have to compete with many products from countries near the US with lower logistics costs. Therefore, in the long run, businesses have to invest in deep processing technology to create other products such as juice, grapefruit essential oil, etc.

Hoang Trung, Director of the Plant Protection Department, said that the opening of the market and the signing of protocols for official export of a wide range of agricultural products will create motivation for Vietnamese farmers to produce specialized products. more professional, more methodical and larger scale. However, at present, Vietnamese agricultural products must meet dozens of strict standards from other countries.
