Note that the market of Ho Chi Minh City in recent days durian products are not many, only sold in some points with strengths in this item. The retail price of whole durian fruit is currently at a popular level of 120,000 - 150,000 VND/kg; Fresh durian rice is from 450,000 to 550,000 VND/kg - the price is not for low-income people.
On the group "Dak Lak Durian Cultivation Association" with nearly 50,000 members on social networks, the gardens offer beautiful durian prices at the garden up to 80,000 VND/kg (wholesale price), other lower quality gardens also offer prices. from 65,000 VND/kg or more.
A representative of an enterprise specializing in durian export said that currently in the main harvesting area in Dak Lak and some off-season growing areas in Cai Be (Tien Giang), Chau Thanh (Ben Tre), the purchase price at the garden is from 65,000 to VND 85,000 VND/kg. Compared to nearly 2 months ago, durian has increased in price from 20,000 to 30,000 VND/kg.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit), confirmed the information that durian prices are extremely high and forecast that in the next few years durian prices will be difficult to reduce.
"The low price is also at 50,000 - 60,000 VND/kg, difficult to be hit in the market, falling to a few thousand VND/kg like dragon fruit. The reason is that durian has a year-round crop when the western region (the Mekong Delta) durian early in January. , 2 already exist – the main crop is in March-May. When the Mekong Delta runs out of the main crop, it comes to the Southeast and then to the Central Highlands. Due to the lack of season, there is no pressure on consumption at the same time. Durian can also be frozen, processed into many high-value dishes, so there is no pressure to sell fresh," - Mr. Nguyen analyzed.
Regarding the Chinese market, Mr. Nguyen said that the official export volume is still very small, only a few hundred tons while the demand for this market is very large. The competitiveness of Vietnamese durian with Thai rivals is quite good thanks to year-round availability, close transportation with lower costs. Besides China, Vietnamese durian has been exported to many other markets such as the US, Australia, Japan, etc. and the market potential is still great.
According to the Department of Cultivation, the country currently has about 85,000 hectares of durian cultivation with more than 50% harvested, the total durian output of the country is more than 670,000 tons. However, the area of durian with export codes to China accounts for a very low percentage. However, through the registration of export enterprises, the demand of Chinese partners is up to 1.3 million tons/year, showing that the risk of oversupply is still far away. However, the Vietnamese durian industry still has to strive to raise standards to meet market regulations to ensure sustainable development.
