Thanks to RCEP, pangasius exports to Malaysia increased by nearly 140%

In the first three months of this year, pangasius exports to the Malaysian market had positive growth again after more than 2 years of being affected by the Covid-19 epidemic.

As of mid-March 2022, the total export value of frozen pangasius to this market reached 7.45 million USD, up 138% over the same period last year.

Currently, Malaysia is the destination market of nearly 40 Vietnamese pangasius enterprises with quite diverse export products, such as: frozen pangasius fillets, short-fried breaded pangasius pangasius, breaded pangasius formed tempura frozen pre-fried, frozen whole pangasius, frozen pangasius cut/piece, dried pangasius bubble...

Thanks to RCEP, pangasius exports to Malaysia increased by nearly 140%

Before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysia was one of the three most potential pangasius export markets in ASEAN (together with Thailand and Singapore). Since the outbreak, trade activities to this market have been interrupted and decreased for many consecutive months.

With the economic recovery, the country's seafood consumption demand is increasing, in which the demand for Halal products also increases sharply. This could be a good opportunity for Vietnamese pangasius exporters to increase their market share in this market.

Up to this point, Vietnam and China are still the two leading markets supplying white fish products of Malaysia. In which, Vietnam takes the lead, accounting for nearly 50% of the total import value of white fish of Malaysia. Behind Vietnam, Chinese exporters are also actively exporting pollock, cod, and tilapia to this market.

On March 18, the Malaysian Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) announced that the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) will come into force for Malaysia. Based on a rules-based multilateral trading system, RCEP will facilitate Malaysia's deeper integration into global free trade and investment by eliminating about 90% of tariffs between member countries. .

RCEP takes effect, Malaysia wishes to promote exports and investment to Vietnam, on the other hand also wants to develop trade with Vietnam in many fields, including seafood. Therefore, if taking advantage of the opportunity, pangasius exports to Malaysia will continue to grow strongly in the near future.
