Opening up the seafood export market

In the first quarter of 2022, the seafood export market recovered with impressive growth and most export items had high growth rates, when the total export turnover reached 2.4 billion USD, an increase of 38 .7% over the same period in 2021. Some products such as shrimp and pangasius have strong growth in both price and export value...

According to the assessment of the Aquaculture Department (General Department of Fisheries), the situation of aquaculture in the first quarter of 2022 is favorable, the farming area increases sharply, along with the prices of commodities have increased. that the price of pangasius is increasing very high. However, due to the complicated weather at sea, the mining sector in the first quarter was not very favorable. In particular, input costs for sea voyages increased, especially gasoline prices continued to rise sharply, leading to low exploitation efficiency.

Meanwhile, the price of fishery products has not increased, even some items have decreased in price compared to the same period in 2021, making ship owners not interested in going to sea, the situation of fishing boats lying on the shore has happened many times. in localities. According to the report of the Directorate of Fisheries, in the first 3 months of 2022, the total fishery production is estimated at nearly 1.9 million tons, up 2.4% over the same period in 2021, of which the fishing output is 875 thousand tons (down 1.2%), aquaculture production reached 995 thousand tons (up 5.9%).

On the recovery momentum from the end of 2021, the export value of seafood in the first three months of the year continued to grow steadily, reaching 2.4 billion USD, up 38.7% over the same period in 2021. This result mainly Weakened by pangasius and shrimp, which are still recovering strongly, there are spectacular breakthroughs. Pangasius exports in the first three months of the year alone reached US$646 million, up 88% over the same period in 2021. Shrimp exports in the first months of 2022 grew well in all major markets such as the US, EU, and Japan. , Korean, Chinese, English...

In particular, the US continues to be the largest shrimp import market of Vietnam, accounting for 21% of the total shrimp export value of the country. The US market reopened after Covid-19, the demand for seafood imports, including shrimp, continued to increase. Vietnam is still the 4th largest shrimp supplier in the US market - after India, Ecuador, Indonesia and shrimp exports to China also show signs of recovery. Forecast, shrimp export for the whole year is expected to reach about 4 billion USD, up 3%.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict also more or less affected the export of seafood products to this market, although these two markets only account for a very small proportion of the total seafood export volume of Vietnam. However, this conflict causes the price of gasoline and many other input costs to increase, affecting the cost and profit of enterprises. For example, the Russian market, annually, seafood exports to Russia reach more than 160 million USD (accounting for 3% of total seafood export turnover of Vietnam). When the conflict broke out, export transactions to Russia were halted due to the risks of banking transactions, lack of shipping vessels and high costs.

Vietnamese businesses now have to monitor the situation to handle inventory or find ways to export to other markets. According to Do Lap Nghiep, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nam Viet Group (Navico), in addition to the Russian market, the export of pangasius to the Chinese market has bottlenecks when China is implementing the "Zero Covid-19" policy. “… In addition, the current increase in world gasoline prices makes transportation costs continuously increase, which is also a difficulty that many seafood exporters have to face in the near future…

At the Conference on implementing tasks and plans in April 2022 and the second quarter of 2022 in early April, the Director General of the General Department of Fisheries, Tran Dinh Luan said that the results of seafood production and export in the first quarter were very good. flourishes. However, the current growth is not really sustainable as input costs continue to increase.

In order to perform well the proposed tasks and plans, General Director Tran Dinh Luan proposed to focus on implementing a number of key tasks such as: On fishing, focusing on deploying inspection teams to inspect the responsibility of the localities to urge and guide the implementation of the EC's yellow card remediation task. Continue to monitor, guide, handle problems regarding certification and certification of caught seafood and manage fishing vessels at the port to ensure that seafood export activities are not affected and implement solutions. combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, remove the EC “yellow card”.

To overcome difficulties arising in some markets such as Russia and Ukraine, the agriculture sector and the Directorate of Fisheries will closely monitor the situation and coordinate closely with industry associations and the State Bank of Vietnam. to support payments for businesses that have exported goods to Russia but financial transactions are stalled. In addition, it will work with the Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) to discuss solutions to deal with immediate difficulties due to market stagnation in Russia and Ukraine. In 2022, the Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance Department will also focus on removing and handling problems related to the Chinese and US markets to find solutions to diversify export markets for the seafood industry.
