Vietnam imports billions of dollars of salt despite great potential for development

Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy, Head of Project Development Department, BimGroup, assessed that the infrastructure development of the salt industry has not been synchronously invested, affecting productivity, quality and price, making it uncompetitive with imported salt. .

In addition, salt growers are still maintaining a low amount of raw salt with low added value and have not yet incorporated science and technology into production chains. Along with that, the stages of storage, transportation and logistics are still difficult.

Although the Government, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and localities have issued many mechanisms and policies to attract investment and develop the salt industry sustainably, the number of large enterprises investing methodically in this industry is still limited.

In view of the outstanding shortcomings, Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy suggested that the ministries and agencies should speed up the investment support for infrastructure for salt production areas according to the development plan approved by the Government.

In addition, localities need to adjust the scale and type of handicraft and industrial production and product structure appropriately to meet market demand.

Ms. Thuy also mentioned the issue of developing and perfecting criteria to ensure salt quality, having an appropriate import regulation policy, and well controlling activities of importing raw salt from foreign markets to Vietnam. South and apply the right type of imported salt, avoiding commercial fraud as well as causing difficulties for domestic production.
